Evaluation of Receiver-Feedback Techniques for Fragmentation Over LPWANs

The Internet engineering task force (IETF) has standardized a new framework for IPv6 support over low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), called static context header compression and fragmentation (SCHC). SCHC includes acknowledgment (ACK)-based mechanisms reliable fragmented packet transmission. For the latter, defines receiver-feedback technique (RFT), compressed bitmap (CB), by which receiver reports to sender whether fragments carrying have been received or not. Such information is carried as ACK payload. Considering extraordinary frame size message rate constraints of LPWANs, payload becomes crucial. In this article, we compare performance CB with that several alternative RFTs, namely, list lost (LLF), List Deltas (LoD), uncompressed (UB), where latter used benchmark. We evaluate considered RFTs in terms size, number Layer 2 (L2) frames needed carry an ACK, Time on Air. Our analysis shows use different from offers significant improvement many scenarios.
